For the 5th KPN GroSkills event in Groningen I was asked to give a presentation on Domotics/Home Automation.

As architect of the KPN API Store I gave a presentation on observability and our quest to get more insight into our platform.
A very brief overview of the slides:
Monitoring Monitoring is for symptom-based alerting
Your monitoring system should address two questions: what’s broken, and why?
The “what’s broken” indicates the symptom The “why” indicates a (possibly intermediate) cause. Observability “Observability”, is a superset of “monitoring”, providing certain benefits and insights that “monitoring” tools cannot deliver.

I like Markdown, a lot. I use it daily for my notes, documentation and blog-posts including diagrams in Mermaid or PlantUML.
When the organisation of Groskills asked me if I could give a talk I suggested to do it on Markdown based tools.
The presentation was made with Reveal.js. Slides are in Dutch.

Smart doorbell

It all started with the question “How to determine someone pressed the doorbell?”.
My main requirements was that I did not want to mess with the existing setup or be dependant on extra components. I have seen several solutions, but sofar none of them met this requirement.
Once the doorbell-button is pressed, the “signal” is send to the Wemos. The Wemos is connected to MQTT via the local Wi-Fi. Home Assistant picks up the signal from MQTT.
